Cerrado Mineiro region is the first demarcated region solely for coffee in Brazil, by a decree of the Minas Gerais Government, since April 1995.
It encloses 55 counties, located in the Alto Paranaíba, Triângulo Mineiro and Noroeste de Minas, presenting an uniform soil and weather standard and allowing only the production of coffees of the highest quality.
Areas with altitudes varying between 800 to 1.300 meters are recommended to the coffee production, they can support irrigation as well as the rainfall. The varieties of coffee in the region are of the Arabica type.
The perfect definition of the different seasons, with a warm and humid summer, suave and dry winter, unique condition for the production of excellent coffees, are found in the great region of the Cerrado.
This climatic condition occurs due to the fact that the Cerrado Region is in a continental area, which allows different standards of rainfall from the other producing regions of coffee in Brazil, since the other regions suffer direct influence from the oceanic masses.
In 2005, the region was recognized as the first Geographic Indication to Coffee of Brazil and of the World, according to norms of the OMPI - World-wide Organization of Copyright; earning, thus, "similar status" comparable to the most famous producing regions of wine.
